Jason Glass, monitor engineer for the Dolly Parton band, Sara Evans, and Tanya Tucker, recently stopped by Equation Audio’s office to give us a video testimonial. Shortly before hitting the road for a world tour, Jason popped in and expressed interest in using Equation Audio’s MicTools For Drummers microphone kit. We weren’t surprised that Jason chose our gear, but we were extremely flattered. Sound engineers such as Jason usually have large budgets to work with, but they choose Equation Audio because of the outstanding quality that we offer. After Jason took the mics out on the road and exposed them to the brutal nature of touring, he happily reported back that they had only one small problem with the gear in a three year span. This is a testament to Bruce Forbes’ vision of building a rugged, quality, affordable product that anyone can use. Whether it’s a platinum recording artist, or a weekend warrior, Equation Audio is the “peoples’ product.”

Thursday, January 28th, 2010Nashville Drummer Shawn Hughes Chooses Equation Audio Drum Microphones
Monday, November 16th, 2009A fourth generation musician, Shawn Hughes by all accounts was born to be a drummer. While pregnant with him, his mother would go to see his father legendary drummer Bob Hughes perform. “My mother told me that I was so feisty that every time I would hear the bass drum I would kick. I guess I got my rhythm at an early age,” Shawn confesses. By the time he was six years old, Shawn was laying down the beat to such great bands as America, Paul Simon and the Temptations and began performing with his father in their hometown of Baltimore, Maryland.
After studying music and mastering the beats of Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Zeppelin and Spiro-Gyro, Shawn hit the Baltimore music scene with unique diversity playing Top 40, rock, progressive jazz and alternative at clubs and sessions. His first tour was at the young age of 15. Shawn would go on to play with many bands including NE, Great Train Robbery, Never Never, Click, Diver Down, Burn, Supine (aka Jimmies Chicken Shack) and Rebel Amish Radio.
An opportunity to leave his hometown of Baltimore and the local music scene came knocking when family friend Jim Yerger of Broken Bow Records invited Shawn to Nashville. His first gig in Nashville was at Legends Recording studio with the very soulful Michelle Veda. Soon after came the opportunity to tour with 3 Doors Down. Although this was a promising gig, timing served as a conflict for a full commitment. Through studio owner and friend, Shawn landed a new project as a tour and session musician with Cinderella bandmates Jeff Labar (guitar) and Eric Brittingham (bass), and the new group Naked Beggars. A call from Brett Michaels of Poison had Shawn recording tracks for his solo record before he hit the road with Naked Beggars. The tour was a great success and upon returning to Nashville, Shawn was offered a full time position with the band.
During the down time, he showcased with Jackson Hill at BB Kings in Nashville where producer Paul Worley noticed him. Within three weeks Shawn was called in to audition for the drummer position for Big and Rich. He nailed the audition to the dismay that someone was already under contract for the position. He then resumed as the official drummer for Naked Beggars and his career kept moving at locomotive speed. Herb Graham of Graham Artist Management contacted him to play with a band that had recently been signed to Curb Records. That band was Rio Grande.
Shawn’s percussive range continues to expand to this day. Whether it’s on the road or in Nashville, you’ll find him playing somewhere with the likes of Randy Nations, Ronnie Pittman, Henry and the Seahawks, Kevin Ray, Ward Stout, Keith Horne, Monty Parkey, Pat Lassiter, Chris Sorrenson, Jonell Mosser, Greg Crow, Crystal Hoyt, Woody Bradshaw, Dave Fowler, Randy Brown Jared Blake Amanda Williams Nicole Witt and the list goes on and on. Along with the studio calls he answers on a regular basis, Shawn also participates in clinics and school seminars pertaining to the music industry and the importance of a drug-free lifestyle. On a more creative level, he is currently working on his own Vegas-style show comprised of world, tribal and electronic percussion. He has recently gained the respects of Michael Jackson, manager Frank DiLeo and corporations such as CocaCola.
Shawn Hughes is a creator of rhythm and he will continue to inspire with his talent, passion and dedication for success. With a lifetime of experience, he has become one of the most well respected drummers under the radar today. Congrats to Ash St. publishing co. for the placement of “Madness”(Timber) on Nash Bridges DVD release. Shawn is currently playing with Chasing Dixie and Stone Cold Reality Show w/ Jared Blake, Nicole Witt, Ray Stephenson and Amanda Williams.

The Woodpicks Choose The Equation Audio F.20 Microphone
Monday, November 16th, 2009The Woodpicks, a 5 piece bluegrass band from Minnesota, recently used an Equation Audio F.20 microphone on a recording of “Walkin’ In Jerusalem.” The Woodpicks chose the F.20 because of its flat response over the entire pickup pattern. So I know you’re asking, “what’s the point?” The point is, not only does the F.20 sound good, but it’s extremely affordable, especially when you divide the cost between 5 bluegrass “pickers.” Oh, did I mention the F.20 retails for around $699 (MSRP)? The street value is around $599. We were once told, by one of our dealers, that this is “the best $2,000 mic he’d ever heard.” We just smiled and thanked him for the compliment.

Quentin Berry Uses The Equation Audio RP-22X Headphones
Tuesday, November 10th, 2009Bassist Quentin Berry stopped by the Equation Audio office to try out a set of RP-22x headphones. Needless to say, he liked them! Quintin likes the extended low frequency that the RP-22X headphones provided. On a side note, Quintin wears the headphones in a reversed fashion because of his unique style of bass playing. Angelo & Veronica: A Church Service With A Heavenly Connection
Thursday, November 5th, 2009Angelo and Veronica: A Church Service With A Heavenly Connection
October 30, 2009
By Bruce A. Forbes
Being the CEO of Equation Audio and co-founder of another well-known brand of microphones, the opportunity to hear the products bearing the brand name of our company occurs frequently, although the venue may vary broadly. Thursday night, October 29th, was one of those opportunities that ranged towards the rare in terms of venue type, but by evening’s end, extraordinary nonetheless.
I met Angelo in a small restaurant in the Brentwood area, southwest of the metro area of Nashville, accompanied by a mutual friend. Angelo wanted to thank me for developing a microphone that ‘finally’ reproduced his wife, Veronica’s very powerful and complex voice, clearly and accurately, while not coloring any of the various textures she produces while singing with intensity and great range. In kind, I’m always interested in new endorsements for our products. He gave me a CD and I left returning to my office. My son Zac, an exceptional pianist and vocalist in his own right was with me and I asked him to play the CD. When the first song hit the speakers, Zac and I immediately looked at one another with surprise. Song after song, the level of vocal and musical talent expressed by Angelo and Veronica simply BLEW US AWAY!
A few months later, I got an email inviting us to a church service. The facility was a medium sized meeting room in the Cool Springs, Embassy Suites hotel, with a stage, a sound system, keyboard and guitar. Angelo and Veronica record most of the background music and vocals and perform with the prerecorded tracks in place of a band. When you hear the orchestration you quickly understand why. But the lead vocals were all live, sung through our own Equation Audio, hand-held, vocal mics, model DS-V11. It quickly occurred to me that trying to adequately describe their abilities actually requires you hear their voices live, singing individually or together or finishing a dual language song as an unforgettable duet, executing perfect harmonies at ranges border lining the impossible and to really intensify the moment, a capella.
Intense, aggressive, articulate, dynamic and other adjectives don’t accurately describe their level of competence, because their stage presence, performing expression, since of purpose, confidence all, can be further expressed with words like extraordinary, exceptional, amazing and a list of other words that tend to enlarge, impress, express and enhance various characteristics of people and materials and experiences. Yet the impact of these words remains ethereally insufficient, so I defer to a far more talented inventor, our collective Creator. If blessings of talent and relationships are assigned or given, then Angelo and Veronica are the quintessential hosts of Great Blessings and fortunately for all who experience their talent, they share their extraordinary gifts with Grace and Enthusiasm. If you’re fortunate enough to experience them live, you’ll leave with an overwhelming feeling that you were given a gift as well, a special one from above.
